The consolidation began in 1929, when The Aviation Corporation was formed to acquire young aviation companies, including Robertson. In 1930, The Aviation Corporation's airline subsidiaries were incorporated into American Airways, Inc. In 1934, American Airways became American Airlines, Inc.
A New Era:
As previously announced February 14, 2013, AMR and US Airways agreed to combine to create the new American Airlines, a premier global carrier. Headquartered in Dallas-Fort Worth, the new American Airlines will become a highly competitive alternative for consumers to other global carriers and is expected to offer more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries. The combined airline will offer customers more choices and increased service across a larger worldwide network and through an enhanced oneworld® Alliance.

The Merger: Together, American Airlines and US Airways are expected to operate a mainline fleet of almost 950 aircraft and employ more than 100,000 team members worldwide. The merger is subject to regulatory approvals, approval by US Airways shareholders, other customary closing conditions and confirmation of American Airlines' Plan of Reorganization by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
Marriott and American Airlines team, gives joint Marriott Rewards and AAdvantage® members new ways to earn AAdvantage miles. Effective as of June 17, 2013 Marriott Rewards will award AAdvantage miles to joint members on qualifying transactions at 3,700 hotels worldwide. Joint members can also choose to convert Marriott Rewards points to AAdvantage miles.

"We designed this partnership based on feedback from our AAdvantage members to deliver the benefits they want. Acknowledgement: American Airlines has flighted into the 21st century, but have they out-flown it's competitors? Notable Airlines that are now defunct/merged, such as Pan Am World Airways (1927 - 1991), Continental Airlines 1934-2010 integrated with United Airlines; founded 1926 (as Varney Airlines), and Northeast & Northwest Airlines (1927 - 2010) acquired by Delta Air Lines has been flying since 1924.
And of course, Trans World Airlines (TWA) has a history that dates back to the 1930's until it was bought out by and merged with American Airlines in 2001.
