Start, Build, and Run a Business That Improves the World

The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook:

One of the many beauties of social entrepreneurship is that it’s never too late to start. You can be right out of school or working in the highest ranks of corporate America. It doesn’t matter. Social entrepreneurship begins with a noble cause, which turns into a passion, and soon becomes a mission worth dedicating your life to.

Make the business of society your business

No one knows the business of social entrepreneurship better than Rupert Scofield. Cofounder and president of FINCA International—a nonprofit microfinancing institution with 7,000 employees serving 750,000 customers in 21 countries—Scofield has been a social entrepreneur for 40 years.

In The Social Entrepreneur’s Handbook, Scofield leads you through the entire process of starting up and running a nonprofit, sharing personal success stories and advice on what not to do—valuable lessons he learned the hard way. The process, while risky, isn’t as difficult as you might think. Practically speaking, you need only two things: an idea and a plan. The former comes from you and you alone. This book supplies the latter.
The Social Entrepreneur’s Handbook illuminates the path to building a successful nonprofit from the ground up. SEH: The one resource you will need to attain your dream of working full-time in service to others—and making a real, measurable difference in the world.

"Good is the Enemy of Great"
This Challenge is Built to Last in 2016 and Beyond—
Leap from 'Good to Great'

Charlie Rose: An hour with Jim Collins on his book Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck--Why Some Thrive Despite Them All"

"The vast majority of companies never become great, precisely because the vast majority become quite good -- and that is their main problem."— Jim Collins

Why Some Companies Make the Leap. . . and Others Don't?  If you're looking to inspire your employees or take a leap forward in your career, this read is indeed a Leaping start from Good to Great.— 'How change doesn't happen'.

Jim Collins book begins with a startling and counterintuitive claim: "Good is the enemy of great." We've become so conditioned to think of performance as something that develops along evolutionary lines -- from poor to good to outstanding -- that it takes a minute to grasp the notion that competence can actually inhibit achievement.

Based on an extensive five-year study conducted by Collins and a research team he affectionately refers to as "the Chimps," Good to Great defines and analyzes the practices that allowed 11 companies to make the rare transition from solid to outstanding performance.

An interesting thought: “how much would someone have to pay me not to publish Good to Great...”— Jim Collins— The Study; it's impossible for me to imagine not sharing what we've learned.

Collins's philosophy is summed up in one noteworthy phrase from the book -- "Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice."

We keep looking for change in the wrong places, asking the wrong questions, and making the wrong assumptions. There’s even a tendency to blame Wall Street for the “instant results” approach to change. But the companies that made the jump from good to great did so using Wall Street's own tough metric of success: a sustained leap in their stock-market performance. Wall Street turns out to be just another myth—an excuse for not doing what really works. The data doesn’t lie.

Management guru Jim Collins asks entrepreneurs to do 10 things that will dramatically improve their companies. What are you waiting for?

Ignite the Spark and Transform Your Relationship —

Ignite the Spark and Transform Your Relationship--

Your life is meant to be poetry. The way you feel when you just fall in love with someone is the way you’re meant to feel about yourself when you wake up each morning.”— RYWs!

Get to it now— Thrive in the places so many of us get stuck. With a significant focus on enriching our personal journey to understand both our conscious and unconscious motivations in partnership, this is less a relationship “diet” book of “do this” and “don’t do that” and more about a deep awakening.

A Creative Lifestyle Change;
A change that comes with helpful ways to shift one's perception of the "facts" and concrete tools with which to make life work better day by day. However, it is left to the reader to decide where they are and what they want to do in order to create the life and the relationship they long for...

Regardless of whether you've been together a month or an eternity, we all need a sense of renewal in our meaningful partnerships. But here's the good news- you don't have to suffer in the Soup any longer than it takes to read this book. Renew Your Wows takes us on a journey of self-discovery that invites a shift in the way we relate to the people in our lives. Renew Your Wows takes months of intensive individual and couples counseling and offers the highlights!
Renew Your Wows teaches us:

To identify and reclaim the Self.

To determine the relational landscape we have created and see whether our paradigm indeed meshes well with that of our partner.

To learn how to Respond instead of React to a vast array of circumstances.

To learn how to differentiate needs from expectations and establish an effective way to communicate that doesn't invite a defensive reaction from our partners.

To create a structure for general communication with friends, family, co-workers and yes, our partners, that is conducive to joyful living and mutual respect.

To establish a set of protocols that help us plan our responses and keep exchanges clean and kind.

To separate Facts from Feelings in our daily discourse in order to understand how we need to be heard as well as truly hearing others.

To know when a relationship no longer serves us and to make a change happen with respect, kindness and peace.

"Psychotherapist Jeffrey Sumber has written a wonderful, well-informed, and immensely helpful guide on how to realize the full potentials of intimate love. I highly recommend this book for those who are committed to taking their relationship to the next (and then the next!) level of happiness and wholehearted wellness." To “inspire and empower young people to lead the best life possible.”—

“When my daughter Stefani was a child, she had to learn painful lessons about the dangers of cruelty and the importance of kindness. She was creative and unequivocally her own person, but her peers didn’t always appreciate the things that made her unique—and different. As a result, they would sometimes taunt, humiliate, or exclude her. It was hurtful for her to experience and heartbreaking for me to watch. But this mean-spirited treatment did more than sting in the moment—it shook Stefani’s confidence.”
Cynthia Germanotta, president of Born This Way Foundation and mother of Lady Gaga, writes about raising her unique daughter and the Emotion Revolution, launched with Yale. Raising Lady Gaga: Why It’s Time for an Emotion Revolution

The Emotion Revolution empowers high school students to create schools and communities where emotions matter. Hear Gaga's mother Cynthia Germanotta talks about the #EmotionRevolution:
*Be Your Biggest Fan*Your feelings matter!

The Born This Way site includes stories of bravery from young people who have overcome bullies, as well as a number of ways for people of any age to get involved in spreading their message.  The foundation was based on three "pillars" of understanding and advocacy.

We shine a light on young people, youth advocates and community members that embody our mission. We hope to leverage the reach of Born This Way to tell the stories of an empowered, creative and compassionate generation that is working hard to build a kinder and braver world.BTWF .

Born to Not Get Bullied: When she was in high school, Lady Gaga says, she was thrown into a trash can. “I was called really horrible, profane names very loudly in front of huge crowds of people, and my schoolwork suffered at one point,” she said. “I didn’t want to go to class. And I was a straight-A student, so there was a certain point in my high school years where I just couldn’t even focus on class because I was so embarrassed all the time. I was so ashamed of who I was.”

The scars don’t go away, Lady Gaga says. “To this day,” “some of my closest friends say, ‘Gaga, you know, everything’s great. You’re a singer; your dreams have come true.’ But, still, when certain things are said to you over and over again as you’re growing up, it stays with you and you wonder if they’re true.”

“The Born This Way Foundation is not restitution or revenge for my experiences, I want to make that clear. This is: I am now a woman, I have a voice in the universe, and I want to do everything I can to become an expert in social justice and hope I can make a difference and mobilize young people to change the world.”

Yes, that sounds grandiose and utopian, “I’m reluctant to bet against one of the world’s top pop stars and the person with the most Twitter followers in the world. In any case, she’s indisputably right about one point: Bullying and teenage cruelty are human rights abuses that need to be higher on our agenda.”Article by Nicholas Kristof via New York Times

A major new project of The Philanthropy Roundtable!

The Philanthropy Roundtable: A mission to foster excellence in philanthropy, to protect philanthropic freedom, to assist donors in achieving their philanthropic intent, and to help donors advance liberty, opportunity, and personal responsibility in America and abroad.

A Major New Project:  Philanthropy in America is a giant undertaking—every year now, more than $350 billion is handed by individuals, foundations, and businesses to a riot of good causes. Rates of giving are two to five times higher in the U.S. than in comparable nations. Privately funded efforts to solve social problems, enrich culture, and strengthen society are among the most significant American undertakings, and have been for hundreds of years.

There is, however, no definitive information source which places U.S. philanthropy in an appropriate context. This authoritative, highly readable new reference work will fix that. In a single printed volume, and easily accessed Web companion, we will chronicle the greatest achievements of American philanthropy, profile the most influential donors, and summarize the best ideas that have been thought, spoken, and written about charitable giving in our country.

The Almanac will conveniently encapsulate the history, purposes, effects, and modern direction of private giving. It will lend missing perspective, and serve as a handy encyclopedic reference. People serious about donating money to good causes will consult it again and again as they refine their giving. And general readers attracted to fascinating history, quirky Americana, and lively biographies will enjoy the brisk narrative of this meaty new book.

How Philanthropy Changed My Life: American leaders who owe their successes to the creative giving in a free society. The Philanthropy Roundtable is America’s leading network of charitable donors working to strengthen our free society, uphold donor intent, and protect the freedom to give. Members include individual philanthropists, families, and private foundations.

The Roundtable is the leading voice in philanthropy for objectivity, integrity, open-mindedness, and stewardship with a commitment to measurable results.

"An authoritative roadmap to navigating the world's economy."

When Cultures Collide:

Richard D. Lewis provides a truly global and practical guide to working and communicating across cultures, explaining how our own culture and language affect the ways in which we organize our world, think, feel and respond, before going on to suggest both general and specific ways of making our influence felt across the cultural divide.

There are penetrating insights into how different business cultures accord status, structure their organizations and view the role of the leader, alongside invaluable advice on global negotiation, sales and marketing. The book ranges from differences in etiquette and body language to new thinking in the area of international management and team-building in Europe and the USA, as well as covering challenging new geographical ground in Russia, China and the Far East.

By focusing on the cultural roots of national behavior, both in society and business, we can foresee and calculate with a surprising degree of accuracy how others will react and respond to us. Lewis adds the often overlooked dimension of language – for example, how Japanese often react in a certain way because they are thinking in Japanese.

When Cultures Collide gives you a greater understanding of what makes other people tick and enables managers to ensure that their policies and activities exploit cultural synergies and make the right appeal to their chosen market.

“A Snapchat what?”
An original promise of social media was that it mimicked real life. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram offered places to capture and share your memories, but after using them for several years, I feel like someone who was sold a lemon by a used-car salesman.
These social media sites have become a highly edited, cropped and filtered version of real life. And the fact that they promise perpetuity only makes them worse.

But there’s a social media tool that, while it’s been around a while, I’ve recently become borderline obsessed with: Snapchat Stories. Readers under 14 can skip the next couple of ex-plainer paragraphs. The rest of you are probably asking yourself, “A Snapchat what?”

Snapchat Stories can either be private, only viewable by your friends, or public and seen by anyone. But unlike other social video services, and here’s the best part, Snapchat Stories last 24 hours and then — poof! — they’re gone. Full Article

Redefining what it means to be successful in today's world:

"Renewal is not for slackers; renewal is a way to increase your capacity, to be more effective."

In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case.

The Third Metric; When you stop … if you ever do…you sense something isn’t quite right. You have a long list of accomplishments that bring great satisfaction – deals, causes, and outcomes that are better because you poured your heart into them. Yet you’ve been giving and giving to every other good endeavor but yourself. You’re depleted. There’s no rest. There’s no respite. There’s no end. It doesn’t have to be that way. You CAN redefine your life to include a Third Metric -- your well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving. Thrive invites readers to hit a pause button in their stressful race for job advancement to enable them to focus on health, wellbeing, giving back, and personal fulfillment. A stress-reducing tool for real people.

Arianna Huffington's personal wake-up call came in the form of a broken cheekbone and a nasty gash over her eye — the result of a fall brought on by exhaustion and lack of sleep. As the cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group — one of the fastest growing media companies in the world — celebrated as one of the world's most influential women, and gracing the covers of magazines, she was, by any traditional measure, extraordinarily successful. Yet as she found herself going from brain MRI to CAT scan to echocardiogram, to find out if there was any underlying medical problem beyond exhaustion, she wondered is this really what success feels like?

As more and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office. Our relentless pursuit of the two traditional metrics of success — money and power — has led to an epidemic of burnout and stress-related illnesses, and an erosion in the quality of our relationships, family life, and, ironically, our careers. In being connected to the world 24/7, we're losing our connection to what truly matters. Our current definition of success is, as Thrive shows, literally killing us. We need a new way forward.

In a commencement address Arianna gave at Smith College in the spring of 2013, she likened our drive for money and power to two legs of a three-legged stool. They may hold us up temporarily, but sooner or later we're going to topple over. We need a third leg — a third metric for defining success — to truly thrive. That third metric, she writes in Thrive, includes our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for compassion and giving. As Arianna points out, our eulogies celebrate our lives very differently from the way society defines success. They don't commemorate our long hours in the office, our promotions, or our sterling PowerPoint presentations as we relentlessly raced to climb up the career ladder. They are not about our resumes — they are about cherished memories, shared adventures, small kindnesses and acts of generosity, lifelong passions, and the things that made us laugh.

In this deeply personal book, Arianna talks candidly about her own challenges with managing time and prioritizing the demands of a career and raising two daughters — of juggling business deadlines and family crises, a harried dance that led to her collapse and to her "aha moment." Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep, and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging, and giving, Arianna shows us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplace, and our lives.

"Media mogul Huffington lays out steps to creating a lifestyle where success is measured not by money and power, but something more meaningful."  Thrive is one of The Season’s Best Business Books:

From sobering reflections on the Great Recession, to an exposé of shady Wall Street practices, to inspirational advice from self-made leaders, this season’s best business books offer something for every reader looking for insight into how money works and how to make more of it.

As You Age, Will Social Media Make You Happier or Lonelier?
The life of a retired senior can be a quiet one,
with family and friends spread far and wide. But gaining mastery of the digital world at this later stage in life can mean the difference between suffering in isolation and leading the life of a (virtual) social butterfly.

Over the last two years, several studies have shown that seniors engaged with technology and connected through social media tend to have higher self esteem and are less likely to fall into depression, especially those living alone or in a retirement home.
