Video: Current rates of vaccine hesitancy in the US could mean a long road to normalcy
Poltical scientist Matt Motta studies the social and political determinants of anti-science attitudes. In this Q&A, he answers questions about the current levels of vaccine hesitancy in the U.S. and how that might affect the country's ability to achieve herd immunity after a COVID-19 vaccine becomes available.

Transformational education: "I started From Prison Cells to PhD."
Nature spoke to three US researchers who have built academic careers after they were released. Article by Virginia Gewin via Nature.com
![]() |
| CAREER FEATURE |
Most applications to academic institutions around the world include a box to check if a student has a criminal history, but a ‘ban the box’ movement is now under way. Last year, the UK Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS) — which manages application to all British universities — dropped its criminal-history question. And in August, the US Common Application, used by 800 colleges and universities, removed the question — although individual institutions can still ask it.
A 2013 study from the RAND Corporation, a think tank in Santa Monica, California, found that incarcerated individuals who participated in correctional education programes were 43% less likely to return to prison after release than were those who did not.
Although 2.3 million people are currently in US prisons, fewer than 5% of people get university degrees — making them 8 times less likely to complete their education than the general public. Fewer still pursue PhDs. Nature spoke to three US researchers who went from prison to PhD programmes to senior posts in academia, and who now aim to help others to find their academic footing. It's time we put that energy to use in the real world: Less Tweeting!
If you spend most of your time on Twitter; you'll quickly conclude that everyone is outraged about everything. It's not only Twitter but also other social network platforms.
Article by Marc Peruzzi via Outside Magazine
Today, Americans are filled with rage at national politics, but we don’t know how to channel that energy into actual change. So we spew forth on social media as if those words—whether vitriolic or rational—are a replacement for doing. They’re not. Which is why social media activism (and, frankly, much of cable news) is largely irrelevant.
![]() |
| Photo Credit: Rawpixel via Pixabay |
And, credit where it’s due, social media is clearly effective at rallying like-minded people to like-minded causes; #metoo (Yes!) and #unitetheright (No!) prove that. But most tweeting amounts to tribal members yelling into a digital canyon in hopes of elucidating a self-affirming echo from people who look, think, and vote just like they do. Pick them selectively and your followers are your choir. Let the Russians pick and it’s an angry mob.
Maybe a tweet or a post relieves the guilt of not-doing for a nanosecond.
And perhaps it makes one feel less alone when the retweets and likes accrue. But social media is a weak palliative. Unless you count rifting, tweeting isn’t doing.
And doing is what heals us.
The Antidote
And if those words fail, we can always put politics and social media aside and fall back to our watersheds and trails and beaches and engage the world as we know it, not as it’s presented in caustic tweets. Read the full article by Marc Peruzzi via Outside
“It is difficult to be certain about anything except what you have seen with your own eyes. And consciously or unconsciously, everyone writes as a partisan.” — George OrwellYour Angry Tweets Aren't Helping
When words failed him, George Orwell stopped writing and took a bullet in the neck. As an essayist in the 1930s, Orwell tried to motivate Great Britain to fight fascism in Spain so the world wouldn't have to fight fascism on their doorsteps.

In late February 2019, the city of Abilene, Texas, made an announcement:
It had ended local veteran homelessness.
It was the first community in the state and the ninth in the country to reach that goal, as part of a national program called Built for Zero. Now, through the same program, Abilene is working to end chronic homelessness. While homelessness might often be seen as an intractable problem because of its complexity–or one that costs more to solve than communities can afford–the program is proving that is not the case.
“By ending homelessness, we mean getting to a place where it’s rare, brief,
and it gets solved correctly and quickly when it does happen,” says Rosanne Haggerty, president of Community Solutions, the nonprofit that leads the Built for Zero program. “That’s a completely achievable end state, we now see.” The nonprofit, which calls this goal “functional zero,” announced that it is accelerating its work in 50 communities.
Here's how they did it.

What's Next? It’s 2039 and just about everything’s changed —
Articles by Max Read and David Wallace-Wells

They are also reminders that, though Americans today may have a hard time imagining a future all that different from the present — we dream less about flying cars and space travel than about somewhat improved health care and slightly more immersive video games — it was not all that long ago that we believed (sort of) those very wild futures were possible just a decade or two down the road. Which is part of what inspired us, this fall, to ask a panel of visionaries from the worlds of tech, sex, the law, and international affairs to make some pretty radical propositions about what the world could look like in 20 years.
The result was an eight-episode podcast called 2038.
Some predictions were cheekier than others, some scarier; on the occasion of the New Year, and the optimism and future panic it invariably brings. It’s 2039 and just about everything’s changed. The Intelligencer excerpted those predictions here:
8 Predictions for What the World Will Look Like in 20 Years
This month, we are all tentatively dipping our toes into the New Year, wondering what horrors and highlights might await us in 2019 - the year that served as a setting, you may remember, for Blade Runner, Akira, and Running Man, three of the most iconic future-casting movies ever made and now divergent choose-your-own-dystopia visions of the years ahead (perhaps some more plausible than others).

'A great read is the perfect gift'―
Sharing the 5 best books he has read in 2018.
December 3, 2018
Article: Annabel Gutterman via TIME
Bill Gates announced his annual list of favorite books of 2018, perfectly timed for the holiday season. The Microsoft co-founder encourages the gift of reading with these five titles, which range from a memoir about the power of education to a guide to facing modern-day fears.
A great read is the perfect gift:
In a post detailing his picks on Gates Notes, the philanthropist acknowledges that he normally does not consider the “giftable” nature of a book, but his selections for 2018 can truly satisfy any reader. “If you’re looking for a fool-proof gift for your friends and family, you can’t go wrong with one of these,” he writes. Here, the five books Gates loved in 2018.

“A breath of immortality for everyone.”―

| MOM: A breath of immortality for everyone. |
Small tokens, scattered around the world, will guide future generations to the underground archive of forgotten knowledge (Credit: Memory of Mankind)
If you were to build your own time capsule, what would you want people—or alien beings—a million years from now to know about us? That we were loving, or warmongering, or dopes strung out on memes and viral videos? That we flew to the moon and made great art, ate Cinnabons (that we measured at 880 astonishing calories), and committed atrocities? How could you begin to represent these times, as lived by nearly 8 billion people? And what would give you, of all people, the right to tell the story?
After these questions would come to another wave of more logistical ones.
Assuming the capsule was found, how would it be translated into the language of the future, whatever that language might be? And what materials could be employed that might last that long? And how could you lead a future race of beings to the capsule itself, assuming our planet might be buried under ice or oceans of red sand by then? It's this very vision of an earth one million years from now that changed Martin Kunze's life forever.

We are all searching for that elusive elixir that will help increase our wealth, gain success and live a life of contentment and peace. Who doesn’t want to find a way to have it all?
Part of the reason these things are difficult for us to achieve is that we never really define what our purpose is in life. We don’t really know ourselves, so we don’t really understand what makes us happy. And we don’t really want to do the hard work to get there.
There’s no magic formula to making all these things happen, but if you’re willing to open your mind and put in the time and effort, you can achieve nearly anything. Here are 16 life changing ways you can attain success, wealth and happiness and live your best life.

Reduce your exposures to common drinking water pollutants:
State of American Drinking Water
When most Americans drink a glass of tap water,
they're also getting a dose of industrial or agricultural contaminants linked to cancer, brain and nervous system damage, developmental defects, fertility problems or hormone disruption. That's the disturbing truth documented by EWG's Tap Water Database – the most complete source available on the quality of U.S. drinking water, aggregating and analyzing data from almost 50,000 public water utilities nationwide.
The vast majority of the nation's drinking water supplies
get a passing grade from federal and state regulatory agencies. However, many of the 250-plus contaminants detected through water sampling and testing are at levels that are perfectly legal under the Safe Drinking Water Act or state regulations, but well above levels authoritative scientific studies have found to pose health risks.
Unanswered questions
Utilities must treat their water to meet state and federal standards before piping it into homes, schools and businesses, but water treatment chemicals can themselves produce other potentially harmful contaminants. Utilities must also provide annual water quality reports to their customers, but those reports leave many unanswered questions.

Imagine that the issues of race, income, education and unemployment inequality, and the resulting segregation, isolation and fear, could be addressed by designing for greater access, agency, ownership, beauty or empowerment.
Now imagine the Just City — the cities, neighborhoods and public spaces where all people, but especially the ‘least not' are included, have equitable and inclusive access to opportunities and tools that allow them to be productive, thrive and advance through the ranks of social and economic mobility.
